What to expect on the day of your colonoscopy
The information below is intended as a general guide only. What happens on the day of your colonoscopy can vary between hospitals/clinics. Follow the instructions provided and speak to your Doctor, Nurse or Pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.
How long does a colonoscopy take?
The length of time your colonoscopy takes can vary, as everyone’s bowel is different. Your colonoscopy could take up to 45 minutes. However, you need to allow 3-4 hours at the hospital or clinic.
Ask Your Doctor/Nurse as they can advise you how long your procedure will take. Normally your colonoscopy will be done as a day procedure.
Who will be there during the procedure?
Generally, there will be a Doctor and 1-2 Nurses in the procedure room.
If you require a support person with you, ask your clinic/hospital beforehand if this will be allowed.
Will I be awake during the procedure?
You may or may not be sedated during the procedure. Your Doctor may offer you the option of a sedative. If you opt to have a sedative, you will need to make sure that you have someone to drive you home after the colonoscopy.
What happens during a colonoscopy?
The camera will be passed through your rectum and into the large bowel. To help guide the camera around the bowel you may need to change your position during the procedure. The Doctor may take photographs and samples (biopsies) from the lining of the bowel.
What will I feel?
You may feel some pressure and discomfort as it can be necessary to put air in the bowel so that it can be fully examined. You can pass this air, and this will relieve the discomfort.
What happens after the Colonoscopy?
You will be in a recovery area after the procedure and monitored. If you have been sedated you will be encouraged to have a rest after the procedure. Once you are awake, and you are feeling ok, you will be given a drink and something light to eat before you go home. If you have been sedated, you will need someone to drive you home.
