Helpful Tips when you’re having a Colonoscopy
There are a few things you can do to make having a colonoscopy a little easier. This includes preparing early and a few simple tips for during the bowel cleansing stage.
Getting ready
- Always read all the instructions at least a week out from your colonoscopy. That way, if you don’t understand anything, you have time to check in with your Doctor/Nurse.
- Plan the low fibre diet as it may be quite different to what you usually eat. So, make a shopping list and go shopping a few days before you start your diet.
- Make sure you have a few different types of clear fluids. The variety will help you take the volume of fluids required to stay hydrated.
- Try to take time off work so you can stay at home once you start taking the bowel cleanser.
- Approach friends and whānau for help for child drop-off and pick up.
- Check you have someone to drive you to the clinic/hospital. Remember they may need to take time off work as well.
During the bowel cleanser stage
- Your bowel cleanser could go late into the night. Find something to distract and keep you awake such as reading, watching movies or TV.
- You may wish to wear warm comfortable clothing.
- Apply a covering of Vaseline around the anus as this can offer some protection to this
delicate area. - Use soft toilet paper and be gentle.
- If your bottom does become sore, try baby wipes instead of toilet paper.
- Put a towel on your bed to protect the bed from any potential mishaps.
